I am looking at a Combat Commander and the serial number is a puzzle to me. The number on the pistol is 70BS6XXX. I thought that the earliest Commander was 70BS01001. I am certainly not an expert but want to make sure of what I am buying before I open my wallet. Thanks for any assistance.

In terms of numerical value, 01001 is less (or earlier) than 6XXX, so there may not be an issue. Simply dropping the "0" may have been normal practice. Suggest a call to Colt Customer Service which might help resolve the issue.

Well the no 0 in the number seems common on the early Combat Commanders....my satin nickel 9mm is 70sc9398 but proof house does not show a 4 digit listing only 5....my satin nickel 45 is 70sc47513 a much later produced gun...BUT on my full size polished nickel 38 super they put the 0 in the number....it is 70s03890....seems they may have omitted the 0 for some reason on the Commanders .....RR.

Colt probably used their own look-up.

I would find it very unusual that a Combat Commander would be faked. Just too hard or expensive to have the markings duplicated on a pistol that is not rare, and what would you make it from?
