The post-1972 shrouded Detective Specials were factory rated for up to 3000 rounds of +P ammo. At that point, the gun needed to be returned to the factory for inspection, and possible frame replacement.

The aluminum Cobra's and Agent's were good for 1500 rounds.

Since Colt no longer has any replacement frames, shoot a few through it from time to time, but don't over do it.

Probably the best +P load for the Colt, is the +P 158 grain, lead semi-wadcutter, hollow-point. These are known in various areas as the: Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, LA, FBI, etc. load. Also "the .38 SPLAT". (That's the sound it makes when it hits).
