The hollow rolled pin in the hammer was used from about 1966-1968. I have a Detective Special that is a little later gun with the 3" barrel. Great shooting little revolver. For me, the extra inch of barrel makes it a lot easier to shoot.
I'll let someone else venture a price. I would guess that the 3" barrels were less than ten percent of total production, and would add 40-50% in value above the 2" barrel, all other things being equal. Hope that helps a little.
