I was at my LGS this morning and had a look a bright blue Detective Special with jeweled hammer and trigger and rubber grips (no medallion) no turn line evident or other signs of being shot. It has a shrouded ejector rod and locks up tight as a hickory knot. What would be a subjective value on this guy? Did the detective special come in bright blue finish? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Went back to the LGS today and took a good look at the lettering and screw holes. No evidence of dishing on the crew holes or shallow lettering. Owner said the guy that brought it in said he hadn't fired it, just had the hammer and trigger jeweled. As I said above it's wearing rubber stocks without medallions (owner wouldn't let me get a photo). Asking price is $770.00 plus the states cut. What do you think about the price?

I would be very leary that the owner is not allowing you to get pictures of the gun. It may or may not be worth the money but not allowing pictures puts you at a distinct disadvantage as to having the quality of the work evaluated or a informed opinion as to if it is a possible reblue. I would be very honest with the seller and say that you need to take the pictures to have these factors evaluated to see if the asking price is waranted. If you are into the jeweled trigger and hammer and you love the gun you have to ask is it worth it to you. If they don't want to play go to john or marc and get yourself whatever you want and you will know exactly what you are buying

It doesn't have the correct grips. The Colt Det. Spls. I have seen with factory Pachmayr grips on them had the gold medallions, and we know the jeweled hammer and trigger is not OEM. Price seems a bit high IMO. Something tells me I'd be skeptical of this one.

In this situation your decision is a good one IMHO. 770 is high to begin with but it is my thought the seller would allow you to take detailed pictures so you could have the whole package evaluated by the experts here to see if the 'Customization" warranted the higher asking price. Being this wasn't the case, you were smart to pass and run like HELL. Now go to Marc @ Keystone Arms or John @ Fugate Firearms and you can score a all original Detective Special for the same or a little more money. This way you get exactly what you are paying for and save yourself alot of stomach acid. If Mrs CRN's GUN BAN LIFTS that is exactly where I will be going for my next "TOY" .....Mike
