I had asked in a previous post but never got an answer about a Detective Special I acquired. The serial number is 3605XX. I know that it is a 1928 model of the D.S.and I saw today in the latest Guns & Ammo that someone inquired on # 5281XX and was told that it was shipped in 1949. I figure mine must be around 1938 or so? Does anyone have the D.O.B. for my gun? Also, what is a good reference book for the Colt revolvers? Thank you in advance.

Your gun was built in 1928! One of the first Detective Specials, those produced from the late 20's,until arouind 1933 had squared butts, giving them a "premium" for value with some collectors.

Not the expert, but I'll try to fill in a couple of blanks. Look here for serial number dating up to 1978. http://www.proofhouse.com/ Notice that Police Positives and Police Positive Specials are intermixed with Detective Specials. Blue book says DS First Isuue were 1927-1946 so yours is in the early range. Don't know if any references actually reflect Colt knowledge of the first one.
This link is a previous topic on reference books.
