So of course I had to get up and check after reading this. Mine will almost seat a 357 but enough is sticking out the back to prevent the cylinder from closing. I think someone bored out your cylinder.
On a side note, I got curious if my 38 special Trooper would hold a 357 and by trying it, I discovered that the diamondbacks cylinder is actually longer than the troopers. Thinner, but longer.
