I was checking some of my barrels and cylinders for internal dimensions, and found some surprising variances.

The groove to groove bore sizes range from 0.338" to 0.441".

On one cylinder (that has not been altered) Throat 0.427", Base 0.452", and Chamber Length 0.97".

Among those of you that have original 44 Rimfire SAA's, I am curious to know how your examples caliper.

Vic. I’d ping Dave Lanara on this.
Good idea. The Colt SAA cylinder with Throat 0.427", Base 0.452", and Chamber Length 0.97" lettered fully. It took Colt Archives over a week to reply, but this was the result from Tyler:

#-15xx
Caliber-44rf
Barrel length-7 ½
Finish-blue
Stocks-wood
Shipped to-Schuyler Hartley & Graham, NYC
Date-July-9-1877
Quant-25

I found mine and measures the following.

Groove diameter at the muzzle .440
Base diameter of the cylinder . 455
Throat diameter of the cylinder .430
Chamber length .972
Opening of the forcing cone .470

Barrel and cylinder number to the gun.

Well, we are close on the cylinder! Two of my barrels calipered 0.438" (#1170 and #499), and one (#1252) was 0.441".

I just don't understand a throat "squeezing down" a 0.440" bullet to 0.430" (or in my case 0.427"). Then the bullet proceeds to a bore that is 0.338" to 0.440".

The one 44 RF bullet that I pulled was not hollow based, either. The headstamp was "U", an old cartridge filled with black powder.

Thanks for measuring.

15xx - Kittredge 7/26/1877
Throat - 0.430
Base- 0.46
Groove - 0.44

14xx - SH&G 7/9/1877
Throat - 0.42
Base- 0.46
Groove - 0.42

Admittedly i have a cheap caliper.
Your #15xx cylinder is close to mine, but tighter on the base and larger on the throat.

Bill, Do you have Dave Lanara's email address? I tried contacting him with a PM, but maybe like myself, he doesn't get email notices that a PM has come.

His website has an email feature, but there is no way to attach pics.
