Some play is not uncommon. Unless you buy a custom target hand fitted gun I would expect some manufacturing tolerance. Yours may be at the outside of tht tolerance but should do fine. Remember this play is not critical to accuracy as the slide, barrel and sights are all one cohesive unit.
I checked 3 Kimbers which is a semi custom gun in my opinion and none displayed a tolerance of that magnitude. Checked 5 Colts from 1926 GM to 1969 Vintage 38 Super all displayed some slop in the slide to hood area. I suspect if you looked at a pre war national match Colt you would see much less as these were hand fitted.

The colt commander i got is my second 1911.I had a Springfield loaded but sold it to get the colt.It had very little play in it. I'm just a little disappointed after reading about how the newer colts are put together a lot better lately. Then getting one that has this much play in it. I got to get out and shoot it and see if it rubs under fire.If it does I will call colt and see if they will do somthing about it.

I understand the play is not critical to the accuracy but for 1000 dollers I expected somthing better then I got

I was also thinking about getting a gold cup.I wonder if they pay better attention to the fit on those.
