It is possible to change the barrel, they are just screwed into the frame but only Colt should do it or a VERY competent COLT gunsmith. Colt is currently backed up 6 months and it take another 6-8 months to get it back.
Buy the barrel length you prefer and be done with it. It's probably more hassle than it's worth trying to convert.
