Hey, what's a good idea without someone who can put it into action?

Happy to share the credits with Mitch and vdm!

Re: For DOB ( Date of Birth) Questions , Please Lo

Has anyone succesfully compiled a list of Python Serial numbers from 1985 (T34453) to present, or anything beyond 1985?

Thanks,

Nope, Colt is very protective of their archives, and doesn't allow just anyone access to the records.

The last person I know of that was given access was RL Wilson when he was writing "Colt: An American Legend", and in that case, Colt themselves considered it to be an "official" history of Colt production.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering about the date of my Python I bought last week. Thanks to your info, I see it was made in 1981.

I looked at the proof house link and can not find the serial no. of a Trooper Mk III that I recently bought with serial no. J96xxx. Can anyone find the year it was made?
Thanks in advance.

After looking again and understanding how the talble works, I was able to find the year my Trooper was made. It was made in 1972. Very good info. Thanks

I know this post is older but the question is a good one. There appear to be enough Python owners on this forum that if we all submit a partial or full serial # for years beyond 1985 I bet we could fill in a lot of blanks or at least be able to help others ballpark the year of manufacture. I simply called Colt Service with mine and they told me right away that my 6" Royal Blue # KT6745 was manufactured in 1992. Maybe the moderator could start a Sticky for this info.
All the best,

+1 on call Colt. Neither of the s/n's of my guns were on Proofhouse. Called Colt and they were very helpful. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I spoke to Kathy Hoyt at Colt regarding my SAA. She could not give me a date of manufacture but could give me a shipping date. That was good for my needs.
Very nice lady, very busy and gracious in her assistance. I would recommend a call to her.

I'm a new user here and had a question on my gun with respect to the proofhouse site. I have a Police Positive .32 Police CTG with serial number 400XXX V. It looks like the end of the proofhouse table is:

1943 238623

Does that mean it's 1943 or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks!

It's possible you have another model that's been fitted with a Police Positive barrel.
The "V" is not part of the serial number, it's an inspectors stamp.

As example, the Bankers Special numbers went up over 406725.
First, determine whether you have the longer Police Positive Special frame and cylinder, or the short Police Positive type frame and cylinder.

It's not at all unusual to see Colt's with barrels replaced with whatever could be found, and you'll see Police Positive Special frames with Police Positive or even Pocket Positive barrels.

One option is to call Colt during business hours. They will give you the production date over the phone, but no other info.
They probably can help you ID just what you have.

New Member here and found the site while looking for information on a new toy.
I beleive the gun is M357 or Pre python 4" serial #17X. I would like to know the year it was made if possible. I could not find a listing for these. I will try and post some pics tomorrow.

Seems like the front site is different than most of these I've seen in that this one is notched instead of ramped. I would rate it around 93-95%. Light holster wear and cyl ring. I would also like to know what kind of original grips went on this.

thanks,
dusthead
