I am not new to the gun world or biz, having been a Class 3 Dealer for 13 years. That was a former life. I am new to Colt Forum and think it would be great for newbies like me here to have reference to some abbreviations used routinely.

I know WTS, WTB, NIB...but don't know for sure the following:

SPF - Sold Pending Funds?
FTF - Friend to Friend?
OP???

Please clue me in. Thanks.

First off welcome and I have a friend that collects who lives in Azle, contact me off line for his name. I visit him often and will let you know next time I am headed up.

ok here goes; OP = original poster, FTF = face to Face, SPF = Sold pending Funds. Anything else you want to know just ask we are pretty friendly around here.

'OP' in some contexts, can also be the abbreviation for the Colt 'Official Police' Model Revolver.

Just as 'PP' can be used as the abbreviation for "Police Positive", or, 'PPS' for 'Police Positive Special', 'OM' for "Officers Model", 'OMM' for "Officers Model Match", etc.

The one that really had me stumped for awhile, and even brought to mind an old song from the recent past:

".38 OP with MOP." You recall, of course, that recent hit Rag Mop? Then figured out it must be a .38 revovler with cleaning accessories. Finally, it was a .38 Special Colt Official Police with Mother fo Pearl grips.

Simple? Not on your life!

Some I use (and some others) which I did not see on that list is:
JMHO= Just My Honest Opinion
IMO= In My Opinion
USPS MO= United States Postal Service Money Order
MO=Money Order
lol= laughing out loud (I probably use this one too much)
NIB= New in THE Box (Just wanted to point out the THE in it)
LNIB=Like New in the Box (used to describe a gun 99% or better in the original box, but will not make the best grade, 100% NIB)
GB= Gunbroker
aka- also known as

Then the not so flattering ones:
FBG= Fake Box Guy, aka Vikrant on GB, Coltboxman, and blovit on Ebay (Someone, forgive me for not remembering who, made up this FBG one and I started using it too)
POS= Piece of .... (I usually only use this talking about one person :rolleyes:)

When I started this internet commando routine I had no idea what most of these acronyms meant. Fortunately m1911.org has a reference list so I slowly figured it out.
Got flagged for using STHP, (Silver Tip Hollow Point) which the moderator thought was the one for: "when the ____ hits..." Any way it was fuuny because he apologized profusley. Which leads me to one I took awhile to figure out: LOL, which means "laughing out loud."
But I do suppose it could mean "lying out loud" LOL.

Edit: corrected

Proper writing technique dictates that the word or phrase be written out the first time it is used in any essay, with the acronym in parentheses, then using the abbreviation or acronym from then on. This should be repeated for each first use for clarity. One should not be expected to refer to some lexicon for translating each post.

That would be ideal...definitely.

And in instances where the term is only used once, and where there is no opportunity then for using the abbreviation afterward, one could still have the abbreviation in parentheses for parenthetical advisement of what the abbreviation looks like, for one's future reference, in case of encountering it without it being written out fully.
