Well, I'm finally feeling a bit better and am able to sit upright and join in with you guys again. A great big THANK YOU for all the get well wishes & prayers. Now lets get back to the Colt stuff...

Last week just before I was rushed back to the hospital, I had found a unique Detective Special. This gun is described in Gary Peer's book as the "Pre" or "Transitional" Detective Special. The serial number of the gun falls within the range quoted by Peer. It also has all the features listed as being "correct" for this model: barrel stampings, polished/blued topstrap, plain trigger, and narrow grips. It also has an Archive Letter. With all the health stuff going on lately I have yet to get the gun in my hands, but here are a few pics to wet your whistle:

That's a beautiful gun!
Wow, that's great, Erik! Thanks. We had some great posts in that thread from Judge Colt, Cam, etal. At the time, I didn't own the gun.
I can't wait to re-read it.
Actually, I forgot about that thread. The one I was thinking of was an older thread, started by a previous owner. I think Hugh owned it at the time.
Some very informative posts in the earlier thread.

I got a text from the next previous owner this A.M., too. Thanks Tom. I wish you'd post on the forum sometime.

Well, I have to down some coffee and get out and start shoveling. Just me and my ergonomic shovel. I think we have about 14 inches of snow so far and it's still coming down. This is NOT going to be fun.

Erik, Thanks for locating and posting that very interesting Thread that shows Malysh's (Mike's) gun. I wonder if anymore information has surfaced on that odd front-sight.
Nope. Never found out anything else.
Whatever sight "enhancement" that was affixed is long gone.

It's certainly odd that the lettering error keeps reappearing. Mine was lettered correctly as long ago as 2007. This is the gun that appears on page 50 of Gary Peer's book.

I'd watch out for this "Arizona Bill" character. I worked with him for a couple years, but now we're getting WAY off topic...

Malysh, I remember reading the original post years ago before you bought the gun. What is the coltforum name of the previous owner do you remember?
Its starting to drive me nuts that I can't find that thread either. I thought "Notched front sight" would have brought up a hit but the old thread must never mention the sight by those key words.
All I remember is his first name is Hugh. I don't remember the screen name.
Thanks for checking. The original poster garnered the best posts, IIRC.
A correction will be issued to snakeman99’s letter. The ones I have seen with the error have usually been reported to us as Detective Specials, and we missed the change when we sent the letter.

Of interest to note - the only location in the records which actually makes any clear cutoff as far as a transition from a 2" PP Special to a DS is the one I screenshot below. And, here it only mentions a ship date, as opposed to an assembly date, which further muddies the waters. If only the ledger keepers had cared about us.

Anyway, the general reasoning here is that before this date posted in the ledgers (October 21, 1927), we will letter them as Police Positive Specials, and after as Detective Specials. I am certain there is room for overlap here, as Radical Rod’s letter shows – based on the Factory Order # / 100 reasoning that JudgeColt supplied earlier (spot on, as usual), that the gun is probably righteous. Unfortunately, the old factory orders are no longer in our archives, which would be pretty convenient for this situation.

Unfortunately, there is no notation in the production / manufacture date records to give us a clear cutoff date, serial number, or anything else to hang our hats on outside of this one notation.

Also, if anyone is interested, the notation reads:

1[SUP]st[/SUP] ship calling for Dec. Sp.
Geller, Ward, & Hasner Oct. 21 1927

Although, what I may do is go through these and pull the factory order numbers from known PPS 2" so that I have them for reference in the future - there are no doubt some that are post-10/21/27 and of course want them to be lettered accurately. Radical Rod - I pulled your letter out and will mix it in to find that factory order. If anyone has any others that are DS letters with a factory order, close to this transitional time frame, you can email me using the email in my signature line.

I think swamprat might have been the first forum member to post my P.P.S. 2" factory barrel gun. If you look at the Colt ltr. addressee....
Paul, if you follow twait's link to my gun, notice the letter doesn't say Police Positive Special. It says Police Positive, which is completely wrong. I just noticed this.
Because the frame, narrow sq. butt, and barrel markings denote this as a true 2" P.P.S., can I get an updated letter?
I don't think calling this Colt post 10/21/27 Detective Special would be appropriate despite a frame SN from 1928 and a ship date of Feb. 1931 to the U.S Govt.

Thanks also for your help a few years back in helping me with info about the other early 1931 shipments of similar revolvers to US Govt. to Atlanta, Chicago, and Cincinnati
Thanks Paul, your help is always VERY much appreciated.

Thanks!
Paul, email with my contact info sent.

I re-read my thread and it was actually Joe Canali who did some extra research for me, sorry!
