I have three questions. I have a Colt pre-Woodsman with Gold in the roll marks. That includes the bottom of the mag, the grip frame and atop the barrel. If I use a sonic cleaner will or might that remove the Gold. Best case scenario would be if a member has tried this already.

Second question has probably been asked a kazillion times. Cleaning and disassembling a Woodsman magazine. If you could just point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

And I am thinking now it is a good time to ask about dependable replacement magazines. Are there any?

There are Colt-made Type 3 Woodsman magazines available on the Internet. Anything older than that is problematic, usually only available from individuals or specialist dealers, usually at high prices.

There is a way to get decent magazines for Pre-Woodsmen, and Type 1's, except they say High-Standard, not Colt, and in some cases, they're not a lot cheaper. Original Model B and H-B magazines will fit Type 1 Woodsmen, and while they used to be cheaper than Colts, that's not as true today. However, the new High-Standard Company also makes replacement magazines, and my experience with them has been good (in High Standards, I don't collect Woodsmen). Like most other mags of this type, they do need to be "tuned" to work properly. That is not difficult to do, and instructions are available on the Net.

Finally, there are Pre-, Type 1, and Type 2 replacement Woodsmen magazines available at numerous suppliers on the Net. I have no personal experience with them, but from what I have read, people don't think kindly of them. Construction quality is often lacking.

So, think of it as a treasure hunt. Cherish your original mags, and safeguard your other working replacements. Remember, if you want to use originals, they won't be any cheaper than they are right now.

Thanks Buck. It is good to get the lay of the land before I start the hunt. My first step will be to find those tune tips. And I will put a shout out right here YOOOOOOOOO!!! Has anyone have a pre-Woodsman mag they can sell me?

The gold paint (NOT gold leaf!) may well be removed with sonic cleaning, but some acetone and a bristle brush will do it as well.

Disassemble the magazine by pushing the follower down far enough for the follower button to align with the cutout on the magazine body. Pull the button out. The follower can then be removed from the top of the magazine, and the spring pulled out. Assemble in reverse order.
