What would be a good price for a nickel Detective Special?

used, for a carry piece, not beat up but not a safe queen either.

I concur with snakeman99's estimates. In addition I'd suggest looking for a nickel Cobra at the same time, since you want this as a carry gun. It's lighter than a DS.

Since some version of the Detective Special was in production for over 70 years, the question is a little broad. What vintage are you wanting?

I would say $400 to $700 range depending on your answer to JudgeColt and overall condition.

But this is just a ballpark estimate on my part and it is pretty broad like JudgeColt alluded to.

As an example, last year I paid $375 for a 1974 nickel Cobra that was in very good shape but did NOT have the original grips.

It was a good deal but with the original grips I would have paid more.

I bought this gem from a retired Milwaukee Detective back in 1998 for 400.00. It is one of my carry pieces since moving to AZ. The SN range makes it a Gen 2 from 1964.
