can any of you good gentlemen tell me how the serial numbers were (or if they were not) put on the older style green lined python boxes? were they written underneath like the next generation of wood grain boxes with red cardboard inserts?

Yes sir you are correct. The "Leatherette" boxes of the 50s I have not seen serial numbers on (At least what I have owned) but the cardboard boxes always have the number hand written on the bottom.
