Hey, being anew forum member I just wanted to say my initial hello.

My current interest in Colt firearms started with becoming the caretaker for my grandfather's Colt handguns after he passed away in 2005 at the age of 94, although my memories a his guns go back as far as I can recall in childhood. During his lifetime, my grandfather was a Highway Patrol officer (motorcycle patrolman) back in the 1930s and 40s, an avid hunter and fisherman, and at one time Chief of Police in Corpus Christi, Texas. He had a small but fairly unique collection of guns, including four Colt handguns.

I was in my late 40s when my grandfather passed away and was too busy with work and family to do much with any of his firearms. Now that I've hit 60, I'm taking a little more time to pay some attention to all of those that have been stored safely away for most of the last 13 years.

The Colts that I have go back to a 36 caliber Navy Colt ball revolver that looks to have been made in London in 1855. It's in pretty bad shape, more of a relic I'd say, but it certainly has historical significance in our family. It was likely first carried by my great-great-grandfather during the Civil war after he immigrated to Texas from Germany. It was later passed along to his son (my great-grandfather) and eventually to my grandfather and finally to me.

I also have a Colt Bisley Model 45 single-action revolver that seems to have been manufacturedin 1902, making it about 116 years old now. My grandfather carried this handgun during his Texas Highway Patrol days. I have a photo of him in his patrolman's uniform with it holstered at his side. That photo was taken over 80 years ago, probably between 1930 and 1935.

The third Colt is a Colt Automatic Calibre 25, a 1908 model that was made in 1917 (101 yearsold now).

The fourth Colt is a 32 caliber Police Positive CTG (4-inch barrel). Looks like it was made in 1921, so 97 years old this year.

I'm doing my best to make sure all these but the ball revolver are cleaned and in working order, and working to document the specifics of each handgun, doing research as best I can into their histories, etc. These specimens are far from pristine, but they certainly mean a lot to me for their general history, family history, and more. It's pretty darned cool just to have them to handle.

OK...that's probably a bit long-winded a hello...but, "Hello." :)

Al in Texas

Edit: Added a photo of my grandfather as a Texas Highway Patrol officer in the 1930s with the Colt Bisley 45 holstered at his side. He was a youngster then...likely in his very early twenties.

I’ve always loved Corpus Christi. I was born there (as was my mom) and had many relatives on both my dad’s and mom’s sides there. I’ve lived in the Houston area for the majority of my life but made trips to Corpus throughout my lifetime. If you know of Luciano’s Italian restaurant at Six Points, my dad’s family started that restaurant around 1960 and owned it for about 50 years. It’s still going, but under new ownership. Just a bit of Corpus Christi trivia.

I’ll have to go back and edit my first post to include a photo from the 1930s of my grandfather in his Texas Highway Patrol uniform with the holstered Bisley. Stuff like that really brings it home to me.

Welcome from Montgomery (Lake Conroe)!
Just about an hour north of me (or only a slight bit farther). It’s good to know there are a few neighbors on the forum. :)
Welcome to the forum.
Back in the '80s, I lived in Kingsville, Corpus Christi, Tomball, and Spring (both north of Houston) for a number of years. All were great places to live. I passed through Pearland a number of times, and it looked like a great place too. Come to think of it, coming from the frozen north, ALL of Texas looked great to me!
It looks like your' grandfather left you some really nice Colts to remember him by. I hope that you'll enjoy them!
Best regards,
Dean

Thanks for the welcome, Dean. I've lived in Pearland for only about 5 years now. I was in League City for about 25 years before this and general Houston area most of my life. I can tell you that Pearland now is probably so different from the 80s that you likely wouldn't recognize most of it. The planners and builders want to fill up every available space with something commercial or residential. We've even got something here called "traffic congestion" a few times a day. Might as well be Houston itself at times. But I do like living with just about everything in Houston close by, and Galveston is less than an hour away, so it offers a fairly happy medium.

Yeah, my granddad left me some pretty neat stuff...the Colts and few others that fall under Winchester, Remington, Mossberg, and a couple of more obscure rifles/shotguns.

But I tell ya...what I wouldn't give for another day's worth of fishing with him. I do miss him greatly, but I certainly appreciate the parts of his legacy that I'm looking after.

Thanks again...

Al

Hello again Varuscelli,
I'm sure that I'd no longer recognize Pearland. Tomball was experiencing that kind of growth when I left. When I returned to visit in the 90s, it was nearly as "urbanized" as Houston.
I have to agree, all the 'things" we are left by grandparents and parents are great reminders. But, I'd trade them all, and all my other firearms, to spend a day with them. We lose so much when we lose "our people". It can never be regained, but the memories remain. God bless them all.
Best regards,
Dean
