Here's the difference between the original long grip frame and the "stubby" grip frame:

Here's some sources for grips:

The classic is the Pachmayr "Compac" rubber grip. Colt used this as an option or standard with gold medallions for years.
You can still find genuine Colt or just standard Pachmayr direct from Pachmayr or most online sellers.

The other good rubber grip is the Hogue Mono-Grip, and Hogue makes very popular fancy wood grips with options like with or without finger grooves and contrasting grip caps. Again direct from Hogue or online.

Other sellers of fancy wood, synthetic, and laminated grips:

Det. Spl, Diamondback, & D frame | Hand Gun Grips, Gun Handles, Pistol Grip from Eagle Grips - Eagle Grips Inc. - Gun Grips

Badger Custom Grips » Colt Pistol Grips

Gun stocks by Herrett's Stocks, Inc.
(Old line maker. You send them a tracing of your hand and they custom fit the grips to you).
