This is a little different, but this got me thinking if many here have seen this before--

About a month or so ago, I came across a firearm on GB that I've been thinking about getting. It's somewhat common and still in production, so I'm not in a big hurry to get it. General price range for it is in the $600 +/- range. I spotted one on GB with a NR auction starting at $495. The seller had positive feedback, but not a whole lot, so I contacted him to get some reassurance, ask about box, papers, shipping, etc. He answered politely, and I didn't ask specifically, but I didn't get the impression that there were multiples of this item for sale.

I put in my bid, and no one else bids. It sits at $495 until 16 minutes before ending, when a brand-new user with no feedback outbids my top proxy bid (it goes up to around $525). I let it go, as I'm not willing to get into a bid war right then. Literally within 5 minutes the item is relisted with a starting bid price of $630! That ends up getting relisted a number of times with the price creeping downward slowly until someone finally bites around $565.

Don't know whether I got out shill-bidded the first time, but it made me wonder.

Let me tell my Jack Pulglisi auction story. Jack bought the ultimate Parker shotgun at one of the real high-toned auction houses. The starting bid was 85k got to 125k and several interested parties are looking hopeful. Jack belts out $250,000 and the room gasped and all potential buyer's hopes were dashed. I'm recalling this from memory so the details may be off but the price is right.

My gunshow neighbor was Rich from New Jersey and he was a player. At Louisville's National Gun Day he'd get a 5 table end cap in aisle D front row that everybody saw first when they came in. Rich was about 15 years older than me but we both had a background in the produce business and hustling in real estate so there was a common bond. All the big shots hung around his tables and he'd have a half a million plus in long gun inventory on his tables. Didn't suffer fools and was independent as hell to negotiate with. There would be bullsessions during lulls and at one particulr Saturday there were several guys hanging out so I took the opportunity to suck up a little and told Jack Puglisi I'd read about his Parker auction purchase. I congratulated him and said I admired the way he handled himself. We'll, he told the whole story with obvious relish, Tony Gallazan was laughing and it was a memorable performance. Rich was battling cancer and fought it hard. He set up at the summer 2011 National Gun Day but left sick mid day Sat and he passed a couple days later. I miss the guy and he was sure good for gun collecting in general.

I agree with the bidding policy of go big one time and you win or lose. On a timed auction like GB I normally don't make my move until the last 15-20 minutes and then I'll bid my maximum.
