Back in the late 70's, I acquired a NIB
2" barrel blue steel Colt Detective Special
with a red ramp front sight; and a special
set of wooden grips. It had the unusal S/N
of: MO 82XX. I was told that this was a
special production run by Colt Mfg. but
no further details were available. I would
like to know if any of the Colt collector's
on board could tell me anything about this
weapon? Thanks in advance, Ala Dan.

I am probably not going to be of much help here, but I don't recall any specific special Dick Specials that had an MO serial number. What I can tell you is that the standard serial numbers for 1975 was H18101-H60000 and M01001-M29600, so you can see they made a ton of them that year and maybe yours just falls in that serialization.

These were a run of Colt DS's from the Custom Shop.

The run was apparently fairly large, since I saw them for sale for several years.

A good many were sold by J&G Sales when they were still in Montana??

Basically, this was just a Colt DS with a red insert on the front sight, and a pair of Zebra Wood grips.
Price was a few dollars higher than a standard DS.

I seem to remember it was also available with a spurless hammer, but my memory could be faulty on that.

Because of the high production numbers, value will be not be much higher than a standard DS, but it is an interesting variation.

Yes, it was a really pretty DS with a deep
rich blue; and fit N' finish were near
perfect. At any rate, my wife's step-
sister has the weapon now and carries
it daily as her CCW piece.

When Ala Dan said "special set of wooden grips" it didn't register, but now that you mentioned Zebra wood it rung the old f**** bell. I have seen a couple of those over the years, but as I recall they went for only a slight premium. Thanks Dick
