In 1970 my Wife and 2 kids went on a car trip vacation driving from Indiana to Maine. Before leaving I decided to stop at the Colt factory and have them look at replacing the grips on an Official Police 5" .38 spl made in 1941, so I put it in our luggage. When we arrived at the Colt factory I went in and told them I would like to tour the factory and have new grips fitted to my revolver. They replied that since the M-16 was in full production they couldn't allow me to do it since they never knew when military brass would show up. I replied that I had come all the way from Indiana to see the Colt factory and was really disappointed. They went into a huddle and said they would escort me through the factory (just me, alone) but that I couldn't see the M-16 line. To make a long story short - My escort started at the foundry and ended at the packing/boxing room (which lasted 2 hours), but also included seeing the entire M-16 production line! After the tour they told me to go to my car and bring in the revolver and watch as new grips were fitted ! I remember the grip fitter telling me never to have the pistol refinished since it had the original rust bluing finish (it was mint), which couldn't be duplicated. Also to keep the original grips.
In the politically correct country we now have, this would never have happened.
