Hi Folks,

I have a 1917 pistol in the 170K serial range. According to what I have read, it should have a type 3 hammer on it. Can you help me identify if this is a type 3 or type 2 hammer I have, and if not a type 3, what are the identification traits that I have to look for to find a type 3 hammer? Pictures comparting them would be helpful. I looked at coolguns but couldnt really determine the difference using the pictures on that site.

Any quidance is appreciated!

Thanks! So am I to assume a type 2 would have a square back edge when looking down at it?

The type 2 hammer, at the rear, rolls down to a sharp corner where it turns under. So yes, the bottom, rear edge of the hammer is a sharp (square) edge.

The type 2 hammer was pretty short-lived in 1914. Less than 15K pistols had it. Here is a nice 1914 with the type 2 hammer and a nice 1917 that's shown in Clawson's book with the type 3 hammer. Serial number on that pistol is close to your 1917.

Thanks for taking the time to post examples that clearly shows the differences!
