This style of box was used for "premium" Colts (target guns) from 1948 through 1954. If a 6-inch E/I-frame with target stocks will fit in it, it is for an Officers Model Match. (Such Officers Model Match boxes are the biggest of this style.) This style of box is generally regarded as the finest box Colt ever used.
Colt also used this style of box for the Woodsman pistols. It might be for Match Target with six inch barrel or a Target model (also six inch barrel). The Sport model used a shorter version. Revolvers shipped in these boxes included the Officer's Model and 3-5-7 (and maybe Python). If you ever see one of these in like new condition, I think you will agree that they are very handsome.
