Recently aquired SAA with ivory grips that came with letter certifying ivory was legally imported before the 1989 embargo. I have not seen a posted indication of such a certification with other sellers of SAA with ivory grips. How important is it to make sure such a certification comes with a revolver before buying? What if a revolver comes w/o a certification? THANKS

Importers and exporters have the "superior knowledge" of ivory legalities. Sellers also have to do their due diligence before selling, but as a private buyer with ivory stocks I think you are OK, especially possessing certification letter. Hopefully there are no ivory police checking private citizens; yet. Love to see pics!

Well, they were certainly confiscating and arresting people with antique ivory in their furnature and such in California. And they lead the nation in laws, often. It sounds like documentation will become more and more important from now on. Some guidelines here:

I have seen the Feds go after larger pieces of Ivory like Tusks, carvings etc where the owner could not prove they were imported before the ban. Smaller items like gun grips seem to fall under the radar but with my luck I wouldn't want to be at my LE range having fun with my Ivory stocked 44-40 1st generation, I know a fed would have to be lurking nearby!

Do a google search for feds that destroys 6 tons of Ivory in Nov 2013. That was a shame for sure, just like all of the guns that get destroyed.

Well guys it is now illegal in the USA unless the ivory is 100 years old and has documents to prove it. It was an Obama executive order!

CITES holds no water anymore, Per Obama executive order. The burdon of proof has shifted from FWP to the owner of the item in question. Just like taxes guilty until you prove your innocents.

I understand the need to protect elephant ivory due to the brutal slaughter of magnificent animals just for their tusks but I'll never understand enacting laws through executive order that would hinder honest trade in old ivory. There were already laws on the books so why is this POTUS signing more executive orders? The folks that deal in ivory for our hobby, firearms, are already jumping through hoops to make sure the consumer gets a letter or certification that the ivory they bought was legally obtained per the law on the books.

I also don't understand destroying magnificent works of art made out of ivory. Confiscate it and auction it off with proper documentation and use the funds to better the country they were found in or use that money to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless but why destroy something without seeing if there is a benefit to that item that will help someone/some cause? I just have to shake my head at the senseless destruction of something that could be potentially beneficial.

It's not like our great president doesn't have other issues that really need his attention. I can't wait until his term is over. He's responsible for selling more guns than any other. It's this type of thing that shows how clueless, and disconnected he really is. Unfortunately he was voted for a second term, so someone out there is ok with him.

Mike I agree. Also this opens the door for people who post pictures of their prize guns at some point. Funny thing is the article I read does NOT give a Executive Order number. The only Executive Order that I have seen that he signed today is raising the min wage for federal contractors. So what is up? The link that vylautus posted I could not open it. I had to do a google search.

Give me a freekin break. It's all going to Asia, mostly China. All the newly wealthy want to wallpaper their new apartments in Beijing with it. Nat Geo did a few articles about the poaching and illegal trade, and China is causing mass extinction of a LOT of animals and animal parts..... Don't see many Americans eating shark-fin soup or smearing bear gall bladders on their privates. Sorry, but China will end all the world's natural resources.

Leave it to Calif to blame the US for all the recent Asian rush on Ivory...
