I think it's great. I'll bet that is one accurate piece, if not a little barrel heavy for all 6 shots. Friend had a Smith 617, 8 3/8" and it was a bear weight wise for the last couple shots from standing two hand hold! Just wanted the cylinder to be empty so I could put it down!

Well, I'm glad everyone here has an open mind.

This all started with "I wonder if I could...". I was shooting my 8" .22 Trooper MKIII one day, thinking how cool it would be to have a .22 Python. Nothing wrong with the Trooper, but the barrel of a Python is just so much better looking (my opinion). I started thinking about modifying a Python, but that quickly became expensive. So you all know what came next...

I had it all in my head, I just needed a competent machinist/gunsmith to make it real. I took an 8" Python barrel that I bought from a forum member, my Trooper MKIII, and a 3/8" .22 barrel liner and headed to the gunsmith. We decided the best path forward would be to turn the liner to snugly fit in the .357 bore. Cut the existing threads off since the are a diferent size and the thread post is much longer. Back bore and thread the Python barrel to accept a plug/adapter that would screw into the barrel and be locktighted in place, the other end is threaded to match the Trooper. Once that was done, the liner was glassed into place. Crown, forcing cone, re-barrel, headspaced... Tah Dah!!!

Only Colt part that was harmed in this project was a Python barrel... The Trooper could be put back to original any day, but it will likely not as long as I own... Too much fun!

A man after my own heart! I love doing stuff like you did. I did not look carefully as the pictures (and they are of an angle that makes the Mark III trigger shape hard to see) and assumed that I was looking at a modified Python. I was wondering why there was no rebated area at the back of the cylinder as there is on rimfire E-frame revolvers.

It appears that the rib on the Python barrel matches up with the top strap on the Mark III perfectly, unlike the way a Officers Model Match top strap would match up to a Python barrel. (That is why I planned to start with a Python and use a rimfire E-frame cylinder and hammer, along with a relined barrel.)

I would speculate that your gunsmith could go into a specialized business creating these "Mark III rimfire Pythons!" And charge a high price for them!

So far it has just been test fired, I will put it thru it's paces this weekend. I hope the liner is in straight... That will be my excuse if I can't hit anything with it!

It did turn out really nice, I couldn't be happer.
