Hello, New here . I was in hopes someone would be able to tell me what the x278 inside my 1851 colt navy would stand for . There are 6 regular serial numbers and these i found inside . Thanks much

you mean 287 it looks like serial number of the gun they match. Is there numbers on the frame? That also should have the same numbers. These guns were all hand fitted so they numbered them so the guns wouldn't mix up in the finishing process. This way all the matching parts were put together into one pistol.
