Everyone who enjoyed the fantastic Lonesome Dove Miniseries (they got it right that time - 19 Emmy Awards) will also find an article in the latest True West Magazine to be of interest; were Larry McMurtry's characters based on historical figures -real Western cowboys/ranchers?

Never heard of a Texas Ranger shooting at a man across a card table and MISSING like Jake Spoon. Right there, I decided Spoon couldn't have been much of a Ranger, which turned out to be true.

Can't beat an old ranger still carrying a Walker when everyone else is carrying colt Saa's and cartridge Remingtons!

It was indeed, 1toughdog,

I really got a good chuckle when Augustus started "wasting" just enough ammunition, shooting purposely low to lull them into a false sense of their security-in-distance, only to discover that it was a huge mistake to underestimate a Ranger and his capability with a rifle.

Bud

That was a great scene. The statement: he can't shoot that far! Distance observation, sight adjustment, the shot, report, thud!

The answer: Yes he can!

Cowboys crying? Ok, I am glad I have never read anything by this guy, nor did I ever see any of his films.
And if he wrote 'Brokeback Mt.' then I think I will not ever need to read any of his stuff.
But, I'm no fiction reader to begin with.
I like non fiction reading. Which, of course is usually somewhat fiction.
But as to authors of fiction, I think their best reading is their non fiction. Like Stephen Kings Danse Macabre.

Lonesome Dove was Epic and folks are living in a fantasy world if they don't think real men cry. The toughest man I ever knew was tougher than nails and he cried on occasion.

I got pretty misty eyed when our dog walked the green mile. That counts as crying. But I'm not a cowboy. I have sixshooters and a cowboy hat, though. I sure wouldn't cry over Angelica Huston. Here's our ex dog Saucy, worthy of a few tears.

As good as Lonesome Dove is, I like 'Streets of Laredo' better. True there's no Gus, but Randy Quaid as Hardin has some of the best dialog in any movie. Mox Mox isn't as evil perhaps as Blue Duck, but he's a whole lot uglier and the Garza boy is a heartless little b*stard for a villain.
