The facility that Doe Run is shutting down is a 'primary' smelter used for processing ore.
The ammunition industry doesn’t use much lead from primary smelters, if any.
Pure lead like that produced from Doe Run’s primary smelter is used for sensitive “specialty” products (certain electronics, medical devices, etc), not ammunition.
Almost all the lead used in the US, and in firearms use, comes from 'secondary' smelting of recycled lead. Lead for ammunition comes almost exclusively from recycled lead, the bulk of which comes from recycled batteries.
Secondary smelting is done in several places, including one owned by Doe Run.
This company is closing the old facility that processed ore and still operates the secondary smelting operations.
They're not the only secondary smelter in the U.S. so Newsmax's hyperbole is misleading, and can lead to undue angst and woe.
