The receiver on this pistol is marked "G", indicating it was originally forged to satisfy a military contract (in 1924). Barrel also has the "K" on the bottom, like the 1924 military barrels. I have another GM a couple hundred numbers later the same way. Perhaps receivers were surplus to needs, or maybe even rejected and reworked before being used for commercial sales.

Thanks, guys. These photos show another pistol I have with the same "G" and "K" markings. The surface of the pistol in these photos is bone dry, so that makes it a little more reflective in the lighting I used. I acquired this one several years from a good friend. He had purchased it from a gentleman who worked at the Pentagon a few years earlier.
