How do I get one? <USMC M45A1>
You're going to have to hunt for one, GunBroker, dealer, etc.
There was an unholy chaotic mess on GunBroker when these were first released, followed by a backlash second wave of crazy prices. Things have stabilized somewhat and prices are typically $3500-5500 last time I looked. Only 1000 total M44A1's were offered (467 Issued and 533 Unissued), just make sure you're getting an actual US Marine Corps pistol.

There are several threads on the 1911 forum specifically devoted to these with lots of info... as always research before buying is a good idea :)

There are several of these "Surplus, decommissioned" Sig pistols
for sale on GB right now. Story one seller told is that these were
part of the trial group the Army used for in field testing. Once the
Army gave the final acceptance, they specified that the trigger
and controls should be black vs. FDE. These original trial
pistols with FDE controls were returned to Sig who resold them to the
civilian market.

He's not far off.

Trial guns were a separate batch with different features, most notably the takedown lever and extractor required a special tool to remove, and had a separate serial range.

These were legit issued guns. At some point, the army decided the black controls were more durable. There were a couple of other minor changes ordered also. So yes, they were sent back with instructions to change to black controls. It was actually cheaper for Sig to replace with whole new guns, very similar to the situation Colt found themselves in where it was easier to replace with new guns than refinish the existing ones.
