I'm finally getting around to checking on the vintage of my Grandfather's Colt Officer's Model 38. He supposedly bought it from someone in the '30's, I think. It's been in the family for a long time with some stories. It's in excellent condition. Can anyone tell me more about it?

It has a checkered backstrap and hammer, if that matters. Here's a couple pics.

Thanks for any help.

BadDaddy, welcome to Coltforum!

You REALLY know how to enter a room!

Thanks for showing gdad's OM.

You can check the serial number (inside the crane of the revolver - open the cylinder and you will see the S/N stamped in 2 places), then go to Proofhouse.com, and look up the date of production of your fine revolver.

Your revolver should be a very accurate gun. Those guns are extremely well made, with lots of hand fitting of parts.
