Recently my 1911 has started to malfunction. It will shoot fine but every so ofter the gun will fire , eject the empty try to insert a new cartridge but it will not chamber all the way. The bullet is in the barrel fine but the slide will not go forward all the way. It is about 1/8- 1/4" short of being fully set. At this point it is jammed. Any advice would be much appreciated.

It will do that if you don't have a firm grip. There can also be other causes (dirty chamber, dry rails, etc.).

First step is a good cleaning of the frame, slide (especially the breech face and extractor), and the chamber.
If you haven't disassembled the slide and removed the extractor lately, you should do so. Clean the extractor tunnel thoroughly.

Use a bronze chamber brush, or at least a new bore brush and solvent to clean the chamber.

Inspect the extractor for damaged or worn hook area.
Test the extractor for proper tension by removing the slide from the frame and removing the barrel from the slide.
Slide a LOADED round up under the extractor and shake the slide slightly. The round should not fall out.

If your gun has had a lot of rounds through it, you might want to replace the recoil spring. Factory spring weight is 16 pounds.
If you're shooting hotter than standard loads, you can go up to a 17 to 18 pound spring.
