Snakeman99, thank you for listing a potential resource for Forum members. It's very thoughtful of you. Unfortunately, these Standard Catalog publications have been known to contain all sorts of errors. It's very unfortunate. The photos are nice, but beyond that, these books tend to be pretty useless.
Yeah, I wasn't sure about the content but may still be some fun reading. You can never have enough Colt books.

The 1st Edition was disaster. I hope the problems have been addressed with the 2nd Edition. I'll wait and hear what others say about it before I buy. The "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" is a great resource. Would be nice if there was something comparable about Colts. If you buy it let us know what you think.

True :)
Thanks for posting, I wasn't aware of it. Even though the 1st edition was pretty much useless, I'm sure I will pick it up off my book man at the gun show. Hopefullly they corrected all those errors and added a bunch of info. I wont get my hopes up though. For $25 bucks I guess you cant expect much unless it is coming from Supica and Nahas! :)

There was/is a whopping difference between the S&W Standard Catalog and at least the 1st copy of the Colt Standard Catalog.

The S&W catalog contains a great deal of information on production dates and serial number ranges.
The authors had access to S&W records and wrote a book giving useful info.

The Colt catalog is really noting more than gun value information lifted whole and unchanged from the Gun Digest Book for Gun Values.
It contains very little usable information and much of that is wrong. It suffers from a common problem with many gun books; photos of the wrong gun with the description for a different model, and just plain incorrect information.
It was written with probably no input from Colt or Colt records.
In short it's a value book, where the S&W catalog is a reference book fro collectors.

I'll wait to see if they corrected the bad info and mis-matched pictures, but it's still a values book not an information reference.

However, it's the only new Colt specific book done in some years so it has at least some value.

I believe that you meant that the S&W (1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd) guy's book was good while the 1st Colt Standard Catalog was not?

Who has read it? I am buying it at $25. I waste $100 every time that I go to a range. You guys should read it first. You can call out mistakes and errors then.

Available now from Amazon. Doesn't seem to be any new information at first glance but great photos of early guns, prototypes, guns from presidents and famous personalities. As with a lot of things I saw on my recent visit over there, this one is "printed in China".

I was talking to Jim Supica when his first 'Standard catalog' came about.

He did it, simply because there were so many fakes in the Colt collecting arena that it almost wasn't worth the effort.

Same was true of Winchester.

Smith & Wesson, on the other hand - wasn't viewed with the same rabid, lust-filled eyes, and if one knew what he was looking at, quite often bargains could be found.

A good reason to write a book, but once it was written, and folks read it - Smith & Wesson popularity rose exponentially, and that was great, if you were sitting on a bunch of them.

Not so great if you were just starting out...

I don't know. I've been accumulating both for almost 40 years.

They are different for so many reasons.

I have never in my life bought a Colt or a S&W on a profit motive. I've always bought them because I just liked them. ;)

I believe the SCSW just got more factory support than the Colt books.

Just saying. I took my grown son to the range with me today. We fired $100+ in ammo (WalMart prices). I bought the ammo. I paid the range fee. It was a great father-son session.

Like I said, I'll buy the new Colt book. I'd like to see it.

P/S The kid liked the S&W 27 (The .357 Magnum) the best....and he hasn't read any books on guns. :D

I have the previous edition. The pictures are good and it does have some good info and some not so good. I wonder if this edition still has the 1950's Python with the full checkered grips/stocks with the SILVER medallions.
