I was talking to Jim Supica when his first 'Standard catalog' came about.

He did it, simply because there were so many fakes in the Colt collecting arena that it almost wasn't worth the effort.

Same was true of Winchester.

Smith & Wesson, on the other hand - wasn't viewed with the same rabid, lust-filled eyes, and if one knew what he was looking at, quite often bargains could be found.

A good reason to write a book, but once it was written, and folks read it - Smith & Wesson popularity rose exponentially, and that was great, if you were sitting on a bunch of them.

Not so great if you were just starting out...
