I've read somewhere you can install third gen barrels on second gen frames but not the reverse. Also, that the threads are different by generation.

So, if you can put a 3rd gen barrel on a 2nd gen frame, which threads are you buggering...the 3rd's barrel or the 2nd's frame? Both?

Thanks

I'm not up on single action threads, but your most reliable source of info is going to be to buy a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's book "The Colt Single Action Revolvers: A Shop Manual".

This is a true gunsmith's manual covering EVERYTHING known about the Colt SAA models, including the info on threads.

Since I didn't do a lot of work on the SAA models, I can't say for sure, but as far as I remember, the First and Second gen models had the same threads, only the Third was different.

If they followed the same pattern a Colt usually did, the First and Second threads will NOT interchange with the Third.
Since I'm NOT sure, buy the book.
Even if you don't intend to do any gunsmithing, it's treasure trove of good info on the guns.

Price is about $30.00 from Brownell's, or Midway.

According to Taffin and Venturino what you describe can be done. The barrel install is a 1-time deal, so if you go through with the change you will never be able to change the barrel again. My understanding is that it would damage the threads on both the frame and barrel, but that is a guess. I would very much worry about long term use as far as the threads coming loose / stripping.

The 1st and 2nd gen guns used 20TPI threads. The 3rd uses 24TPI. No doubt this was one of the dumbest things ever done by Colt, but it is what it is. There were very few short barrels made by Colt for the 3rd Gen NF. In fact, a 'loose' short 3rd gen NF barrel is worth much more than a 2nd gen.

The Colt SAA shop manual does not address doing this swap, but it is treasure trove of tech specs. on the SAA.

I recommend you only use a 3rd gen barrel on a 3rd gen gun and a 2nd gen barrel on a 2nd gen gun rather than risk possibly ruining your frame. Peacemaker Specialists is a good source for replacement 2nd generation NF barrels.
