New Holster for SAA

2332 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Abwehr
This is my first time on the Holster Forum and I was hoping someone may have heard of this holster manufacturer. The name is R.K. Mauk, Pueblo CO. I found this one on E-bay and thought it looked to be a nice looking holster for my SAA revolver. I looked for the name on the Internet and did not find anything. Any help would be appreciated as to this maker. I have attached a couple of photos showing the holster.

I would guess that this is a 1950s or 1960s holster, but could be wrong???

Wow, Nice holster, and what a great buy at $80.00

I see a couple of references to this R. K. Mauk but they go nowhere. Even my best holster reference material ("Packing Iron - Gunleather of the Old West") doesn't have a listing or any holsters by this R. K. Mauk.

Your best bet would be to hope that Mr. Turnerriver comes by. There isn't much he doesn't know about holsters, and to top that, he's a great guy too.

Good luck,

Bud

Matchlock,

Thank you for the comment about the holster! When I saw it on E-Bay, I thought it would go for more than the $80, but I got it. The holster just has the appearance of being quality, and with the Old West "look" to it. I could not have one like it made today for that price.

I was just interested in the maker and wondered if anyone may have heard of him. If his other work is as nice as this holster, he was top notch!
Nice looking work but I would bet it's from a contemporary maker.
I'd agree - I think it's maybe 15 years old, or so - but not much over 20 years.

The advent of Cowboy and Western Action Shooting - SASS and NCOWS - saw the rise (and fall) of some talented leather workers.

The wear and tear of that game also put some age on the hulls, and the older pieces are looking pretty good now - especially on the unlined ones that were done in the simple, older style.

Looks like it fits a double action, and is a copy of an 'R.T. Frazier' - also from Pueblo.

I carry my 1907 SAA in one of his floral-carved crossdraws - Frazier's, that is.
There is a Rusty K. Mauk, aged 56 or so listed as living in Pueblo, Colorado. I agree that it is a relatively recent holster. Nicely made. I found one other reference to a holster & belt that he made being used in the TV movie Commanche Moon. Bud, I wish I knew all that I don't know about holsters but at least I'm still learning. Regards, turnerriver

Guys,

I really appreciate the information on the Holster! I felt it was a local maker, and a holster that is not too old. I agree with all of you with the age, but it sure will look good with the revolver!

"dogface6" mentioned it looks like a Double Action holster and I noticed that also! The width at the top appears much wider that a standard Singel Action. I also have two 1877 and one 1878 revolvers and hope the holster might fit one of the 1877s. The 1878 has a 7 1/2" barrel and that would look odd in this holster, LOL!

How it turns out, I like this holster a lot, it is just plain nice! Again, you guys have helped a lot and I appreciate it!
Thank you for that, and I'm glad the lads here were able to help you out with information on your holster.

This Colt Forum is the best place on the planet to obtain information on Colts specifically, and other brands from time to time also.

Glad you came and joined us, and I hope to see you around again soon.

Since I haven't already said so, welcome to the Colt Forum.

Bud

Thanks for the warm welcome to the Colt Forum! I have always been a semi-auto fan with a large collection of WWII German weapons and Confederate/US Civil War Cavalry weapons. The Colt revolver has always interested me and now I have gotten into the revolver scene! So far I have accumulated some nice Colts with the 1873, 1877s,1878, and more "modern" Colts that go from the late 1890s up to the 1930s. I will stay with the pre-WWII revolvers. I have to admit that I also like the S&W revolvers too, but the Colts are my favorite! There is nothing better than the sound...... "Its a COLT"!
Well guys, the holster arrived in yesterday mail and it is gorgeous! All of you were correct, it is not a vintage holster and is in new condition. There are no rub marks where a revolver has ever been put into it. It does have some age to it as there is no new leather smell. I speculate it may be 5-10 yrs old and has just been stored away. The stitching is modern thread and is hand stiched. After one comment that it appears to be for a double action, the SAA 5 1/2" barrel fit perfect! After a long day yesterday, I did not try my 1877 DA Colt to see if it fits, but will do that this weekend. Whoever this H.K. Mauk is, he did some excellent work making this holster. The $80 I paid for it is well worth the price!
