I have zero ideas of your interests. I do know mine. If the gun were mine I would leave it as is unfired in the box. It is worth a fair amount of money as it sits, once fired it drops a few hundred. It is a third gen gun so it can be replaced. Sometimes something so good comes along and some cash needs to be raised. This gun could be a quick sale for some serious money to fund an even better gun. Of course I tend to lean towards first generation guns so they can get expensive.

I have pretty much the same gun. I bought it as a NIB gun. It's one of the few "new" SAAs that I bought over the years. One thing that pushed me to buy it was that Colt isn't making BP frames any longer. After a few years I thought to myself. This is crazy, it's really not a rare in demand gun why not use it as a shooter. Maybe it will loose a few dollars to some but as long as I take care of it I'll recoup more in the enjoyment of actually shooting it than leaving it in the box locked away. It's your gun do what will bring you the most joy.

Years ago I was talking to Bob Munden on the phone about doing action jobs on a pair of Ruger OMVs. He asked if I had any Colts. I told him I did, but wasn't shooting them. He asked if I was saving them for someone else to shoot after I died. Well, his health declined, I traded off the Rugers, got action jobs on the 2nd Generation Colts, one by Peacemaker Specialists the other by a well known local gunsmith. Identical and excellent shooters. I don't shoot them a great deal, but I don't hesitate when the mood strikes. That is what they are for, after all.

I just did some grazing on GunsInternational.com and found two P2870's (7 1/2 inch barrel with "black powder" style frame). One was listed for $2695 and has been sold and the other is listed at $3295 and has been there for a while. Your P2840 with 4 3/4" barrel is probably a wee bit more desirable but I think these prices are in the ballpark for what you might expect if you decide to sell it.

I would have shot it when I bought it. I can not stand the idea of having a gun I will not shoot. Years ago I got a fairly good deal on one of the Winchester John Wayne Commemoratives. I did not shoot it. After a couple of years, I sold it. I think I made a few dollars. It used to annoy me to no end to have a gun I could not shoot. So I had to sell it. I had several other Model 94s at the time, I had shot them all and could have shot one any time I wanted. But It just bugged me to have a gun I could not shoot. I have guns I have not shot for 40 years, but I have shot them and will shoot them any time I want to. So I think you should shoot it.

To each his own, if I only had the one Colt I could see shooting it but if you have other Colt/s that has been fired why shoot a new one that has gone years without being fired? But we each have to decide what our own thoughts are. I have owned several unfired Colts but have sold all but two that I want to hang on to and I just don't have the urge to fire either one after all these years.

Shoot it ?!?

Hell's bells... this wouldn't even be a question for me since I'd have already had it out watching Once Upon a Time In The West, Man-With-No-Name(s), Have Gun Will... well, you get it.

After all of that dry-firing, quick drawing and fanning - would a couple-three hundred rounds really matter?

All I wanna hear from you now, Mister, is this; How's the point of aim/impact? :ROFLMAO:
