Nice honest Colt 1917's are bringing good bucks today!

The days of $1000 1917's are gone unless there dogs. Really clean honest 1917 are bringing $1700-1800 with original finish and %85 plus condition. About time they are being hunted for prime collectors. I do not see many today.

Gad! I am old enough to remember Klien ad`s for 1917`s for $29! I once owned a pair of both colt and smith 1917`s that were unfired! I probably sold them at a gunshow for not over $250 apiece in the 70`s or 80`s. I still own a 1917 smith but I don't have the original grips.

Glad I held on to mine. Have one "as new" from the Bill Powell collection.

The days that they were $400 are gone too. But when prices rapidly spike, the days of yore will come back sooner. The days of people paying thousands for common, wartime finished handguns are numbered.
It may have to do with the centennial of WWI.

WW1 100 year has something to do with it. Across the board on The Great war weapons and T.E. The increase in collectable has been a moderate climb over the last 5 -10 years. I expect more value in the next 5 years. Look at the British Webleys.
There's one in a local shop with original holster and belt for 3K.

So true. When I bought my 455 New Service, and did a search with 455 looking for ammo and empty cases, I was taken aback by what some are asking for unaltered 455 Webleys.
I agree though if 1917 colt revolvers do a rapid price increase it may be due to the 100 WW1 events. It may be a time to move those if one was to sell and take advantage.

There are still bargains out there, if you look hard. $400 a couple of years back.

At one time I had a factory reblued M1917 that had belonged to the Chief Of Police of Lakeland, Florida, complete with the rework paperwork from the factory, Sold it to finance something else.

Not I own a Colt M1909 U.S.Army that has been rebuilt somewhere in it's travels. This is a .45 Colt not an .45 ACP. I enjoy shooting it very much. Very glad to have it.
Can't say rising prices will hurt my feelings.

S&w 1917

From a WWI doctor's estate. All original, ammo was in the pouches with 1917, 1918 dates, got the belt with it, too!

There was a Smith 1917 in my LGS with holster, moon clips etc for $1,000 in what I'd say 85% condition. At first I scoffed at the price but now I'm thinking it may not have been that bad. It did have have an aftermarket adjustable rear sight that mounted to the frame screw at the top of the side plate though, however it didn't appear to be anything that couldn't be removed. Are the Smith's as valuable as the colts? The colts always seemed to be a couple hundred more to me.

I think I paid $600 for this one around 2004.

I may be exposing myself to scorn for saying this but, IMHO, comparing a high condition S&W 1917 to a comparable condition Colt 1917, the S&W comes out way ahead. They just took more time with the finish. For those I've seen, the values seem to be neck-and-neck.

Your S&W is beautiful. I wish I had one. They fit my hand perfectly, and the craftsmanship is wonderful. I had a commercial model, which I sold to help fund a Shooting Master. I miss it!

AFAIK, mine's a "nice, honest one"! Need some better pics, though.
