I was visiting my local shop and overheard another customer, who was examining a used python, mention that he thought the gun had been refinished. How would you tell if the gun had been refinished. I do know that S&W actually stamped a "N" on the frame of guns that left the factory with a nickel finish, did Colt ever do anything like this?

Yes Colt did much the same. I do not have a large collection of nickel guns nor do they cover a wide range of years, but I can tell you that each and every one I own has the letter N stamped on the left grip frame under the stock.

None of mine are renickels.
