I went down today for my NRA Range Safety Officer certificate.
This is a very good all day class, with extensive materials. And an excellent instructor who knows his stuff.
He brought an extensive collection of every type, size, make, and model of firearm known to mankind. For us to clear.
There were some old people like me, but also some young, some leo, and a young lady (32) that we shoot with regularly.
One thing that was emphsized was the importance of the safety and all aspects associated to keep the ranges open.
There have been about 15 that have been closed down in one way or another in the last 10 or 20 years in this area, and there are more shooters than ever.
But the shooting sports and gun ownership, and self defense is in jeopardy without these ranges.
We need a place to shoot.
And they have to be approved and economically viable to be there.

Excellent!

I have been thinking of signing up for that Instruction/Certification also.

I used to be the self-appointed unofficial 'Range Master' any time I was out Shooting with pals, and or Pals with pals-of-Pals ( even worse ) and, thank Goodness, someone was. Eeeeeeesh! I am very glad I was 'there' and on the Ball, even just as me, without any formal Training or Certifications.

Some of the un-safe or downright dangerous and stupid/mindless things otherwise Grown Men and Women can and will do, with their Firearms at a Range, people who claim to BE 'Shooters'...

Always best for someone a little more hip, to keep an Eye on things, and on them.

Thank you for your comments.
As far as I know, no other cert. is needed on it. But they may tell me yet.
It does help for a general understanding, but I think the real issue is experience. You just have to get out there and see who does what and where they may do better.
I am very much interested in taking more of his classes as he was excellent.
But I think the real lesson was judgment. We have to be safe, but not paranoid or overdo it.
He did show us how even some of us overdo it, let alone the 'anti's'.
