Noticed on old Colt SAA IMG_3131.jpg cylinders the flutes are uniformly pitted in relation to the rest of the outside surface as in this picture. Is this an indication that it originally was a black powder era cylinder and powder caused the pitting in flute low areas? THANKS

The whole cylinder might have been pitted also, but by buffing the OD of the cylinder they removed the pits but didn't buff the inside of the flutes. They buffed the OD of the cylinder so much that they nearly lost the definition of the notches and approaches.
