Looking at a Colt Sherriffs Model 44spl/44-40. Very good condition, blued/cch 45000 serial range. They're asking way to much but when I looked at it the other day the guy said make an offer. So thought I would ask here. They are asking $2399 down from $3300. I was thinking $1500 to start.
Thanks all.

A reasonable offer is just that, a reasonable offer, and $1500 is a reasonable offer for a used early 3rd gen.

We just had a guy on this forum who couldn't sell his 3rd gen at $2000 and ended up taking $1800 for a local sale so $1500 is a good starting place in this economy and market.

Nothing reasonable about offering someone 2/3 of the price he's asking. Especially a Sheriffs model after he just lowered it $900.00.
If it was a million dollars he could lower it $997,600 and I'd still be unimpressed.
I'd turn my back to you and go sit down.
Wouldn't bother me at all, I have walked away from guns before and bought them at my offer later on down the road. I can see where the economy is going and the amount of Colt's that are going to be hitting the market in the next few years.

This is at Scheels. I don't know if it is a consignment or if they bought cheap trying to make a buck. Poor guy who showed it to me didn't even know how to treat it. I showed him. He was holding the hammer and rolling the cylinder. Some marks on the cylinder not bad. I showed him half cock and full cock then to rest. They should have had it zip tied if they knew anything. Thanks all.

I sometimes simply say "I'm going to lowball you" and make a lowball offer.
If I have a table at a show, low money invested and want to be rid of something, I'll tell the first guy interested to make me an offer. They him hah, and I say, "lowball me". Most often it's a win-win.
It's just as insulting to ask 1/3 more than what it's worth as to offer a 1/3 less.

When 3rd Gens started really going up in price a few years ago these 1980's Sherriff's Models were some of the last to go up. About 3 years ago they were common at $1600 to 1700. About the only thing cheaper was a New Frontier. I think most people bought them to flip and it did not work so well and they are actually coming down now.

With the caveat that the run of black powder framed Sherriff's Models and Storekeeper Models from around 2004 to 2012 or thereabouts are superb and in a whole different class.
