Python complete dis-assembly

I had a 1968, four inch, nickel Python opened for a badly needed internal clean up yesterday, the first I think, since leaving the factory, judging from the reddish orange grease inside.

With everything out of the frame except the firing pin, I could not lay hands on my roll pin punches to take off the sight in order to access the firing pin.

I finally used enough C L P and compressed air to insure the area under the sight and firing pin channel was clean.

I have it back together now, in order to shoot today but, could I have used a 1/16th flat punch, (brass) or maybe even the flat end of a proper sized drill bit to remove the sight pin in order to clean it "down to the bone" as the saying goes, or would I have mushroomed the roll pin and ruined it ?

Pertaining to the rear site, you need a size .060 punch in order to remove the pin. A 1/16 roll pin punch is ok for putting the pin back in, but it is too big to fit in the hole in order to punch the pin out. I had to buy a special 3 punch set on Brownells. I also recommend using a pin starter holder when re-installing the pin also.

I should mention that you don't need to take the site off completely to clean underneath it. Just loosen the screw that adjusts the elevation, until the site is up off the base. Then spray CLP under it and then blow it out. Much like you said you were doing. That is all you need. There is nothing special under there that warrants full removal in order to fully clean.

Just be sure to put a tiny drop of oil down into that roll pin, and make sure it drips out the other side.

Why???

I've seen a few Colt DA revolvers that had been sitting in a safe for twenty years or more, inside the original factory box, and guess where the gun was rusting?
