I was looking at a 6" blue Python today and it had a numeric serial number of 949xx, but below the number it had an M stamped. Is this M part of the serial number or does it designate some type of Modification. I was not aware that Python numbers included letters. Can you straighten me out?
Thanks,

I think 949xx places this Python somewhere around 1968 or 1969 production. Letters entered the Python serial numbers in late 1969 or early 1970, when serial numbers had an "E" prefix. Pythons have had letters as prefixes or suffixes ever since.

That Python was made in 1969.

The "M" is just a factory inspection mark.
It isn't part of the serial, nor does it indicate anything to do with a modification.

Stans and dfariswheel,
Thanks for your input. It is a clean gun that has not been shot much, but the blue is a little thin(poor factory job?) so I'm giong to pass on it.
Thanks,
