Hi all
I picked up a nice 1961 vintage 4” blued python that has nice gen2 stocks on it. At what year did they switch from full checkered gen 1 stocks to the Gen 2? Wondering if grips are original to the gun. Serial is 18256 so made later in 1961

Thanks.
K

Don't hold me to it as I may well be wrong...but I believe the change to the smiley-face stocks was sometime in 1960. I have Python #9400 which was made in July 1960 with fully checkered stocks and I understand it was somewhat later in the year the change was made...just how soon after my revolver was made I don't know but the design change was probably already in the works. No one may know at what exact serial number the change was made.

OK so it’s possible if not likely that these are the correct grips. Thx

The Gen 2 would be correct for your Python. I have a 61 also it has the gen 2 grips that I know are original to the gun

My 1960 6 inch blue came with fully checkered grips, serial number is in the early 9000 range. A 4 inch blue I have made in 1962 has Gen 2 grips would think yours are original as others have said.

full checker gen1s transitioned in 1960 in the mid 9400-9700 serial numbers in general......to a oil finish gen2 stock with a skinny horse medallian (pic 1).......late 1960 early 1961 grips transitioned from oil finish skinny medalian to what we call a normal gloss finish Gen2 stock with normal medallion stocky horse with curved tail etc.(pic 2)..

they do ...full checkered....they were used on pythons up to about 9400-9600 serial numbers....i picture above gen 2 early...and gen2 later ....i didnt think it applied but there are also gen2 to gen 3 transitional.....the transition from gen1 to gen2 happened in early 1960 production
