The 'Detective Special', if one count the original version, which was a 2 inch Police Positive Special in name and had no model name Stamped on it, this began in the mid 1920s and the Detective Special was Serial Numbered in with the Police Positive Specials, where it remained, and, there is no way to know how many of which were DS and how many of which were PPS, when viewing PPS Serial Number data.
As above, the Detective Special was produced from the mid-1920's to 1995, with a couple of interruptions in the 1980's.
The Python was produced from 1955 to 2003-2004, with ONE Python made in 2005 to commemorate the 50th year of production and the end of production.
That was the only Python made that year and it was a highly engraved and inlaid show gun.
Due to Colt's serial numbering system and gaps in production data, it's impossible to make a valid guess about how many of either were made.
Like most gun companies, Colt production data is considered a company secret and they seldom release information.
