I have a Colt 6" D-back that dates to 1981.
Can anyone tell me what style box was original to that era Diamondback ?

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

That's just a 1 piece box with a large Colt logo on the center correct ?

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Yes Jeff. Here is one such example. http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=21144543

The example above measures 12 3/4" X 6 3/4" X 2 3/4" and will fit up to a 6" revolver.

The 2 1/2" and 4" may also have come in the smaller woodgrain box measuring 10 1/2" X 6 1/2" X 2 3/4" that will fit up to a 4" revolver. This size box is the same as you would expect to find used for a Gov't Model.

This single piece woodgrain box with 2 piece styrofoam inserts was used up through 1985. After that they switched over to the maroon (150 anniversary) box. So a very late Diamondback would have come with a maroon box.
