Paper absorbs moisture and causes rust. You're better off just laying it on the shelf.

If there's a reason you want it covered, I'd take a look at Brownell's Gunsmith Supply and buy some vapor paper.

This is a special paper that's treated with some chemical that gives off fumes that PREVENT rust. This stuff is so effective, that's what the military and industry use these days instead of protective grease.

Also, there are available plastic bags that have a similar product inside.

A good, cheap storage method is to put a sheet of vapor paper into a heavy-duty freezer zip-lock bag with the gun.

The gun is protected for about 10 years.
