Rip-Off ALERT

Hey, guys....
Watch out for a guy that calls himself Jacob Torres. He tried to sell a Colt 1902 to me that is up for auction on Gun Auction by the rightful owner. Another *#[email protected]!#*$#@! scammer caught by one of our own Colt Forum Members (not me, he did a great favor to me by digging up the other auction). I won't name the member, but he knows who he is, and I thank him again.
He (Torres) got a very descriptive last reply from me that I'll leave up to your imagination as to what I told him:mad:

He offered to sell me some Hendricks belt buckles, and when I asked for pictures he sent me pictures that I had posted on the internet! I am stringing him along for now to see how far he will go.:D

I assume that he is watching this forum and probably more specifically the WTB threads. He contacted me a couple of days ago talking about having a single action army for sale but the condition was very vague and it sounded very rough on the few details he provided. I smelled a rat from his first email because of his poor use of the english language and told him no thanks.
He contacted me and tried to sell me one of my own guns LOL! He responded to my WTB ad for a Wilkerson 3" Combat Python. I asked for a pic of what he was selling and lo and behold.....a pic of one of my Wilkersons on my own study desk. What a menza!
If he reads this thread, I guess he will change his name, so we need to beware of anyone who has something to sell. That's a shame.
I hope this guy is not another "sleeper" on our Forum!
He wanted me to send payment by wire to him in Fort Stockton, Tx, then wanted an extra $30 for shipping of the buckles. I told him that I have a buddy working on a drilling rig near Ft. Stockton, so to save money I will have my buddy call him and set up a meeting to buy the buckles and bring them to me. I asked for his telephone number, and he gave me a Pennsylvania area code number. I wrote him back about this, and am waiting for a response.
Well, I was wondering how long it would take for the SCAMMERS to infiltrate the Colt Forum. It's getting to the point I will never buy anything off the web unless its a FTF meeting. It's a shame because there are so many good people out there and one bad apple ruins it for all.
The scammers are everywhere, think Bernie Madoff, you just have to do as much due diligence as possible and then decide what level of comfort you have in pulling the deal off. Personally I have only done FTF on guns but on other things for my motorcycles and cars I have both bought and sold without ever meeting or for that matter even speaking to the buyer. Just be skeptical and if it is too good to be true.......
I generally screw with scammers for as long as they will keep answering my emails - I figure as long as they are spending time trying to scam me they have less time to really scam someone more trusting. Guess I kinda got a mean streak.

I LIKE THIS !!! I hope you turn 'em every which way but loose before doing the Manual-of-Arms with 'em and dropping 'em on their head.

I kinda wish I had messed with him a little longer. But my temper got the best of me, and I told him exactly what I thought of him. And believe me, it was VERY NASTY! I wonder why he hasn't tried to contact me again ???;)
Just a couple of thoughts on this issue. I have done a few deals on this forum, only to buy something. All were outstanding.
In each example, via a couple of PM's, I quickly established a rapport with the seller. In each example the seller was sincere and honest.
In each example, somehow these people are my friends and we occasionally exchange personal emails. It simply doesn't get any better and if I had a need specific to their 'expertise' would ping and offer to buy something.
So, my take away from this is, on the other forums, Let The Buyer Beware. On this forum, it only takes a PM or two to know if you are dealing with the real deal or a dork. So far, I have not met the latter on this forum. Just do due diligence and thank you, you folks.
Timeline of an attempted scam........

READ FROM BOTTOM UP:

Yes, I have many doubts you idiot! You sent me pictures of my own buckles
that I posted with my "want to buy" ad! You are also trying to sell a
Wilkerson 3" Combat Python to the man that actually owns the gun & sent him
pictures of his own gun, & Colt 1902 that is posted on Gun Broker and
belongs to someone else.

KEEP LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER SCUMBAG, WE ARE COMING FOR YOU!

Jacob,
That seems awful high for mailing costs. I have a better idea to save
me some money. I have a buddy that is working on a drilling rig near Ft
Stockton. If you will give me your telephone number, I can have him
give you a call and make arrangements to meet you and pay for them.
Then he can bring them to me when he comes back this way.

That sounds like a fair price. I think that I can afford to buy
all 4 buckles at that price. Where do I send the money?

That's funny, but we now there are more out there, so everyone be aware.

I asked this jerk if he knew anyone on the Colt Forum. He said he was a member, but just joined, and didn't know anyone yet. Said a friend alerted him to my WTB ad, and he went from there.
When he said he didn't know anyone here on the Forum, I got that felling in my stomach that something was wrong.
I thought why didn't he contacted me thru a Private Message, or posted a reply in the WTB section? Not smart.
Hugh's story reminds me of some email conversations that I read somewhere on the internet about people stringing the Nigerian scammers along. They made for some very entertaining reading.

I have taken great pleasure stretching the conversation out as a very eager rube. Eventually when they can't close the deal, I let them go thinking they may have misplayed the pitch, "what could have been".

Must be a decent number of vulnerable people out there. Humans are pretty weird sometimes.
