Hey all! New to the group. My wife and I came into a SAA that we think is quite valuable. Unfortunately the gun is located in S Lake Tahoe with a family member and we are in Indiana. We need to find an expert who can determine whether the gun has been refinished or not. Any suggestions? Anyone? Anyone?

Tmorrow, welcome to Coltforum.

Post several high resolution, good quality photos right here, showing the entire gun and all of its markings, and our Coltforum experts will tell you all about the gun. No personal visit with the revolver is required.

Based on the buffing that is apparent on the bottom of the butt as well as the color of the gun, I would bet that it has been redone. The case coloring looks great and it is not unusual to see a SAA where someone just had the blued parts redone. The ivory grips are quite valuable and would probably bring $500-700 by themselves. I would value the gun, as is, at apx. $3000. That is just my guess.

Defintely refinished....in my area a $1500 gun with a $1000 pair of grips on it. Nicely done anyway!

I agree that its been refinished, but but pretty well done. Suspect areas include, but aren't limited to, the fit between the trigger guard and frame, soft serial number on butt, buffing on cylinder and bbl. It's a pretty gun and would make a great shooter, but due to the refinish not a real high ticket item.

If it's mechanically sound, I'd rather have it than a current production SAA, but I wouldn't pay more for it than I would for a current piece.

Best regards,

I agree that the lack of crisp markings indicates that the gun has been buffed heavily before refinishing. I wouldn't go over $2500 if it has been refinished.
