Does anyone out there know when Colt began and when they stopped "Stamping" the serial number on the inside of their wood grips? Thanks!

I think (note qualifier) that they stopped during WWII.
Prior to the war, Colt's wood grips were fitted to the frame for a perfect fit by leaving the grips on during the final polishing.

The serial number was to insure the grips went back on the right frame.

After the war, the costs of this were just too expensive.

I have seen 1950's to 1960's grips with an assembly number marked inside with pencil, but I haven't seen a post-war serial numbered set of grips, verified as done at the factory.

I've never seen a pair.
Auto grips fit to the frame isn't as critical as the old Colt revolvers, so I don't think it likely.
